The Peace Garden School
The Peace Garden School serves the population on the urban fringe of Kathmandu, it is a semi-agricultural region, many families working in labour intensive employment; farming and manufacturing, at places like a nearby brick factory.
Arjun Maharajan is the Headmaster and has been a long term friend and associate of the RNV Nepal community. He works alongside local community groups and government officials to identify and assist those who may not be able to afford to go to school.
Give a child the chance of an education
Near the village of Khokana, many families live and work in brick factories. They are among the poorest families in Nepal, often travelling from rural areas to find seasonal work making bricks.
Life in a brick factory is extremely hard. Parents work long hours for very little money and the whole family can become caught in a cycle of poverty. When the children are young they may remain with their families around the brick factory, but as they grow older — sometimes from the age of only 10 or 11 — there is increasing pressure for them to contribute to the family's work and income.
Children can find themselves carrying bricks from one part of the factory to another, stacking them, or helping to load and unload them. It is hard, physical work that no child should have to do, and once a child begins working regularly it becomes increasingly difficult for them to continue their education.
This is where education can change a life. RNV Nepal is working with the Peace Garden English School to give children from local brick-factory families the opportunity to attend school instead. By supporting their education, we hope to break the cycle in which poverty leads a child from life around the brick factory into working there themselves.
